چکیده

As with many animal and plant groups, Madagascar has a high level of endemicity among its bee fauna (Pauly et al., 2001). While it has been assumed that many Malagasy bee taxa have resulted from dispersal events across the Mozambique Channel (e.g. Michener, 1977), there have been no studies that have explicitly assessed how frequently bees have been able to cross this barrier or have assessed the likelihood of vicariance models, involving the rifting of Madagascar and India from Africa, in shaping the Malagasy fauna. Madagascar provides an excellent opportunity for contrasting vicariance and dispersal models because the time at which rifting occurred (c. 80– 90 Ma) is well understood. Molecular phylogenetics of the allodapine bee genus Braunsapis: A-T bias and heterogeneous substitution parameters.

Extreme AT bias in Hymenopteran mitochondrial genes have created difficulties for molecular phylogenetic analyses, especially for older divergences where multiple substitutions can erode signal. Heterogeneity in the evolutionary rates of different codon positions and different genes also appears to have been a major problem in resolving ancient divergences in allodapine bees. Here we examine th...

Molecular Phylogenetics of the Exoneurine AUodapine Bees Reveal an Ancient and Puzzling Dispersal from Africa to Australia

— Previous phylogenetic studies of the bee tribe Allodapini suggested a puzzling biogeographic problem: one of the key basal divergences involved separation of the southern African and southern Australian clades at a very early stage in allodapine evolution, but no taxa occur in the Palaearctic or Asian regions that might suggest a Laurasian dispersal route. However, these studies lacked suffic...

Molecular phylogeny and historical biogeography of the large carpenter bees, genus Xylocopa (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

The biogeographical history of major groups of bees with worldwide distributions have often been explained through hypotheses based on Gondwanan vicariance or long distance dispersal events, but until recently these hypotheses have been very difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish. New fossil data, comprehensive information on Mesozoic and Cenozoic coastline positions and the availability ...

Shiitake mushrooms and molecular clocks: historical biogeography of Lentinula

Aim Fungi make up a large, ecologically important group of eukaryotes that has been neglected in historical biogeography. In this study, molecular phylogenies and molecular clock dating were used to infer historical biogeography of the shiitake genus, Lentinula Earle, which occurs in both the Old World and New World. The major goals of this study were to determine if the Old World and New World...
